The program included consideration of intervention in the public sphere, local business development, addressing walkability, and connectivity, along with promoting short-term projects during the Muslim holidays.
In 2016, the East Jerusalem Development Company in the Jerusalem Municipality identified four complexes for development on the seam between Jerusalem’s Jewish and Palestinian neighborhoods. Their designation was based on joint dialogue with the land and property owners to develop positive tourist uses in these centers with the aim to ease tensions at the intersection between the city’s eastern and western sections. The company prepared a program for the East Jerusalem Development Company to develop the four complexes. The program included upgrading of the public space, local business development, addressing walkability and connectivity, and promoting short-term projects during Muslim holidays. In 2017, the company oversaw the planning and construction of a Ramadan Market in a complex on the seam between the Umm Tuba and Har Homa neighborhoods. During 2018, planning was initiated to revitalize Gihon Road in the Silwan neighborhood as an inviting public space for residents and tourists. The planning was carried out in close cooperation with the landowners and tenants.
