The programmatic model led by the company was based on the community establishment of Beit HaRishonim (the Founders House) in vernacular construction, meaning—without architects and planners—a move that allows for the strengthening of community ties and grass-roots action to re-establish the house from within the community, while turning outward to new audiences.
Beit HaRishonim (Founders House) overlooks the Hefer Valley, situated majestically on the Kurkar ridge near the grounds of Bitan Aharon moshav. Built in the late 19th century, the house was inhabited by the "Group of Twenty" that later founded Kfar Vitkin. After years of neglect, the Emek Hefer Economic Society led an effort to reopen Beit HaRrishonim as a center for the communities of Emek Hefer.
The program model led by the company was based on communal establishment of Beit HRrishonim in a vernacular construction, that is, without the input of architects or designers—a move that allows for strengthening community ties and grass roots action to re-establish Beit Harishonim from within the community through outreach to new audiences.
Construction and renovation is being carried out gradually following basic repair of the complex. At the heart of the process, as mentioned, is the integration of the community in the opening of the house—from the program phase, through the construction phase, and throughout the operating period. The company provides curatorial, content and management support to the creators who are responsible for the revitalization of the complex and its content. Beit HaRrishonim hosts a multidisciplinary range of exhibitions, residency programs, workshops, lectures, performances, and special events throughout the year.
